The third national Confederate flag, a variant of the Confederate flag was discovered in place of the Whiteville City flag at the city flagpole on the 701 Bypass Wednesday morning.

Bernard Dockery shared the now viral post on Facebook of the flag, saying “if this is in Whiteville, we can do better.”

The flag was removed by Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder. The city in a statement said the following: “The City is aware of the trespass and removing of flags at our welcome sign. The incident is under investigation. The unauthorized flags have been removed.”

The vandal or vandal’s have not yet been identified.
