The NC Parents Bill of Rights has left many questions for parents, and many debates into the new policies it enforces. One of the biggest debates has been “Should teachers have to alert parents if their child asks to be called by a different name?”, in accordance with the bill.

“Senate Bill 49, Parents’ Bill of Rights, requires schools to tell parents if their child asks to use a different name or pronouns at school. It also restricts instruction and discussion about gender identity, sexual activity or sexuality in kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms unless a child asks a question about it in the context of classroom activity.”

Many critics believe the bill puts teachers in a vulnerable position, and may put a child at risk if a parent reacts in an abusive manner. Many supporters of the bill say it is the parent’s place to know this information, and that this bill will allow for more transparency into the child’s life at school.
