Last night, February 10th, at the Whiteville City Schools Board of Education’s monthly meeting, School Resource Officer Deputy RJ Fowler was recognized for his heroic actions with a certificate presented by Board Chair Greg Merritt.
On January 31, 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM, SRO Fowler was conducting a routine patrol in the cafeteria at Whiteville High School when a student urgently approached him, unable to speak and struggling to breathe. The juvenile was choking.
Without hesitation, SRO Fowler sprang into action, immediately performing the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the obstruction. Due to the height difference, he had to lift the student while administering the maneuver. Moments later, the student was able to expel the food blocking his airway and began breathing normally again.
Assistant Principal Stephen Clontz quickly called for the school nurse and 911, and Nurse Wanda Nance provided follow-up medical care. The student’s mother was contacted and informed that her child was safe and stable. Thanks to SRO Fowler’s quick response and training, the student was able to return to class without further incident.
SRO Fowler’s bravery, quick thinking, and commitment to the safety of his students embody the true spirit of service. We are incredibly proud to have him as part of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and Whiteville High School.
