Columbus Daily has confirmed through multiple sources that the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Standards Division forced the Family Dollar store in Whiteville to pay penalties after multiple inspections found proof of overcharging on some items.
An inspection in July 2024 found a 14% error rate for seven over charges on a 50 item order. Another inspection in August found an 18% error rate for 24 overcharges on a 300 item order. This resulted in a $2,385 fine.
Another inspection in October found a 6.67% error rate for 20 overcharges on a 300 item order. For that they were fined $3,395.
The store paid a total of $6,320 in fines. This is a developing story.
