According to State Highway Patrol, two vehicles crashed in a head-on collision Saturday afternoon on Hallsboro Rd. near Barney Tyler Rd.

One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, with the other driver taken to CRHS with minor injuries. The driver pronounced dead has been identified as retired police officer Clay Hagood.

Hagood worked for the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years, and worked for Whiteville and Tabor City police departments.

His funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 2:00pm at Peacock Funeral Home’s Chapel with the Rev Scott Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Pierce Cemetery.
