Tabor City, NC – On November 26 and 27, 2024, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division, including Narcotics Detectives and the Heavy Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T.), conducted a successful operation resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of illegal narcotics.

While patrolling Highway 904 East on November 26, H.E.A.T. deputies observed a vehicle leaving a residence on Pine Circle Road known for drug activity. The vehicle, which exhibited an unusually loud exhaust and was observed speeding, was stopped by deputies after it reached 73 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. The driver, consented to a search of the vehicle. While no illegal substances were located in the truck, deputies discovered heroin, crack cocaine, and powder cocaine on the passenger after observing him discard a suspicious item during the traffic stop. The passenger, whose name is being withheld, was arrested and transported to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center. He was charged with possession of narcotics and received a $25,000 unsecured bond. During questioning, the passenger provided information linking the narcotics to Zaki Butler, the resident of 102 Pine Circle Road. Based on this statement, deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence.

On the morning of November 27, deputies executed the search warrant with the assistance of additional deputies of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Butler was found in his bedroom and taken into custody. A thorough search of the property uncovered narcotics and drug paraphernalia in the bedroom and kitchen areas. All evidence was seized, and Mr. Butler was transported to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center, where he was formally charged and turned over to Detention Center staff.

This operation is a testament to the dedication of Columbus County deputies in addressing illegal drug activity and ensuring the safety of our communities. Sheriff Bill Rogers praised the teamwork and vigilance of the Special Operations Division and H.E.A.T. team, stating, “The hard work and commitment of our deputies are influential in keeping drugs off our streets and holding those responsible accountable. Their efforts make Columbus County a safer place for everyone.”
