CCSO released a public service announcement Friday warning county residents of a Jury Duty Scam that’s circulating in the county. The scammers claim you missed jury duty and demand money via gift cards, wire transfers, and prepaid debit cards.
“We want to keep you informed and safe from scams that are circulating. One such scam is the **Jury Duty Scam**, where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement or court officials to trick you into paying fines for supposedly missing jury duty. Here’s what you need to know:
**How It Works:**
– Scammers call or email, claiming you missed jury duty and must pay a fine immediately.
– They may ask for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards.
– They often use threats of arrest to pressure you into paying.
**What You Should Know:**
– Legitimate court officials will NEVER ask for payment over the phone or via email.
– You will not be asked to provide sensitive information like your Social Security number or bank details in this manner.
– If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and do not engage.
**What to Do:**
– Report the scam to your local law enforcement agency.
– Contact your state’s Attorney General’s office.
– Spread the word to friends and family to prevent them from falling victim.
