Via CCSO: SUCCESSFUL ARREST MADE FOLLOWING SHOOTING INCIDENT IN WHITEVILLE

Whiteville, NC – On July 14, 2024, at approximately 10:00 P.M., deputies from Columbus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a gunshot wound at 500 Jefferson Street in Whiteville.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered the victim, Mr. Floyd Angus Jr., who was found to be under the influence of alcohol and in an altered mental state. Mr. Angus had sustained a gunshot wound to his right elbow, with the hospital staff confirming an entry wound without an exit wound, indicating severe damage to his bone and elbow. Due to the severity of the injury, Mr. Angus was transferred to a specialized medical facility for further treatment.

Before transfer, Mr. Angus provided a brief statement to deputies while receiving medical attention. He reported that he had been arguing with his girlfriend, Ms. Julie Crampton, over the phone while he was working on a tractor at his property. After exiting the tractor and entering his wood cabin, the argument continued in person. According to Mr. Angus, Ms. Crampton struck him in the face and head multiple times, prompting him to shove her away. Ms. Crampton then retrieved a revolver from under a pillow in the bedroom and fired at Mr. Angus as he attempted to flee through the front door, striking him in the elbow. Mr. Angus managed to escape and hid under a truck, observing Ms. Crampton exit the home with the handgun and head towards a creek behind the property. Seizing the opportunity, Mr. Angus ran to a neighbor’s home to seek help. Following Mr. Angus’s statement, the case was handed over to our detectives with Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

On the same day, July 14, 2024, Ms. Julie Ann Crampton was arrested at her residence on Mt. Moriah Church Road. She has been charged with one felony count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and Inflict Serious Injury. The warrant specifies that Ms. Crampton did assault Floyd Angus with a pistol/handgun, a deadly weapon, with the intent to kill and inflict serious injury. Ms. Crampton is currently being held without bond.
