Columbus County Schools has confirmed the death of Financial Officer Jay Stanley. Stanley joined CCS in September of 2022. He also previously worked for Whiteville City Schools, and Bladen Community College.

Columbus County Schools said in a statement Tuesday:

“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our Finance Director, Jay Stanley. Jay passed away suddenly on October 23rd, 2023, at the age of 50.

More than just a guardian of our budget, Jay deeply understood the purpose behind every dollar: to enhance the lives and education of our students. Meticulous in audits and compliance, Jay’s ability to maximize resources has had an immediate impact on Columbus County Schools. During the past year, Jay made vast improvements to our financial system, and had brought our system a much needed level of efficiency and accountability. His nuanced understanding of allocating funds positively impacted our educational programs and, most importantly, our students.

Jay was not a numbers person, he was a people person, and through his professional life and his personal life, his ability to bring out the best in everyone he touched is a testament to his lasting legacy in our system and our community. Jay was a financial officer of the highest caliber, and our district will feel his loss deeply.”
