Racist Remarks made at Softball Game

Report By: Logan Kennedy

UPDATE

Duplin County Schools Response:

Upon learning about the poor sportsmanship that took place at a recent athletic event, Duplin County Schools, in coordination with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and another school district, took immediate corrective action.  Federal law and Duplin County Schools’ policies prohibit discrimination and/or harassment of any kind. Reports of such violations are taken very seriously and will be investigated thoroughly.  Appropriate actions will be taken against anyone who violates board policy and/or established codes of conduct.

Thursday night, at East Columbus Jr/Sr High School, the lady gators were taking on the North Duplin Rebels in a softball tournament. During the game, some members of the crowd are reported “mocking a native chant”, and another person calling players, ‘Sand N*****s.’

The largely Native American community of Lake Waccamaw is taking the incident very seriously and wants it to be investigated, so far, Duplin County Schools, and the N.C. High School Athletic Association are investigating the incident.

NHPCM has reached out to Duplin County Schools, Columbus County Schools, and the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, we will have those responses available as soon as possible.

We are also working on getting some audio from the game, which caught the remarks. This will be available on our Facebook page: facebook.com/nhpcm
