Students on Uniforms

Do you think the school board will change it even if it has full support?”, she answered with “No, I don’t think they support us as students.”

Report By Gemilea Lopez – Contributor, ECHS Student Council Member.

Most students have worn uniforms all of their lives but recently there has been talk of schools eliminating the uniform policy. Although students have been wearing their casual clothes in school, there was still the policy of uniforms enforced. Recently, Columbus County Schools released a survey asking parents about whether they would like to get rid of the policy. However, we interviewed two students from the Student Council.

Freshman Class President, Jordan Burney, was interviewed and was asked a series of questions. The first question we asked was “What’s your issue with the current policy?” Jordan responded with “Uniforms are bad. There is really no need to have uniform since we already have clothes and it’s a waste of money.” We also asked “What’s your proposed policy?” He said “Students should wear what they want to an extent that causes no disruption to the school.” We wanted to really ask “why?” they didn’t like the policy and was told by Jordan that he thought the clothes were “tacky” and “felt weird.” He told us that he disliked polos. The last two questions was “Does your offered policy have support?” and “Do you think the school board will change it even if it has full support?” Jordan answered the first question with “No but it will once he talks to the principle” and he answered the last question with “They would consider it but I don’t know if they would change it completely.” Now we will move on to our other interview.

This Interview was from our Sophomore Class President, Hannah King and was questioned with the same questions as Jordan. She replied to our first question with “It makes sense to get rid of it since they believe that ripped jeans will cause men to get aroused.” Her proposed policy was to allow ripped jeans, tank tops, and any type of shoes. She also added “Most of my jeans are ripped since I fall on the ground and they get ripped. “I’ll be mad if I’m blamed for assault based off what I was wearing.” She was asked if her policy would have support and said “Most of the dress code is aimed towards the girls and I believe that girls would also support her with that policy.” For the final question ,“Do you think the school board will change it even if it has full support?”, she answered with “No, I don’t think they support us as students.”

Students in ECJSH are voicing their opinions along with parents and members in the community. We will have to wait until the school board makes their final decision. The following poll shows what parents and other community members think on the topic.

  1. My daughter is only 8, we recently bought a house up here this past summer. I didn’t realize it was in an area where there were uniforms or we would of passed and moved somewhere else. I shouldn’t have an 8 year old child coming home and telling me that she doesn’t know who she is anymore bc she can’t express herself through her clothing. As a parent that is horrible to hear. Also there is literally no where up here to buy them after school starts. If I felt the need to drive all the way to Wilmington just to buy her clothes we would of stayed in Leland.
